Ex: Round Goby Why are some species called
Non native “non native” while others,
Invasive like the round goby, are
called “invasive species”?

Non native are originally native to Turkey), but
NOT invasive they are not considered an invasive
species. Invasive species, according
to the U.S. federal definition, is “an
alien [non-native] species whose
introduction does, or is likely to cause
economic or environmental harm or
harm to human health.” Some fish
species, such as the brown trout,
Coho salmon, and Chinook salmon,
are non native to the Great Lakes,
but are not considered invasive in our
region. However, the label of
non native or invasive can change
based on the specific location. For
example, the largemouth bass is
labeled as an invasive fish in British
Columbia, Canada due to several
instances of the bass playing host to
parasites and for leading to declines
and local extinctions of other species.
The round goby is an invasive species
because it reproduces very quickly,
can displace native fish by taking
optimal habitat, and eats
larval fish and eggs.
