Continuous Monitoring Buoy (photo credit: Todd Miller, UW-Milwaukee)

Is your medicine cabinet full of expired drugs or medications you no longer use?

How should you dispose of them?

Prescription or over-the-counter drugs flushed down the drain eventually enter our local water bodies, endangering aquatic life and water quality. Medications can contain chemicals that cannot be removed during the water treatment process. In order to minimize the potential negative and irreversible impacts, unused or expired medications should be dropped off at designated locations. Many community-based drug “take-back” programs offer the best option.
