Position Overview
The Watershed Recovery Director leads the planning and delivery of high-impact watershed recovery work for the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance. The role turns science, partnerships, and investment into measurable gains in water quality, habitat, and community resilience across the Fox-Wolf River Basin – with special focus on the Winnebago Waterways and Lower Fox Watershed.

Key Responsibilities

Watershed Recovery Strategy & Leadership

  • Help shape Fox-Wolf’s Strategic Plan and Basin-wide Recovery goals.
  • Implement a comprehensive watershed recovery strategy that advances long-term water quality and resilience priorities.
  • Lead coordinated, science-based recovery areas efforts across priority areas.
  • Represent the organization at meetings, advisory groups, technical forums, and community events; communicate the value of watershed recovery to diverse audiences.

Partnership Development & Regional Coordination

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with counties, municipalities, state and federal agencies, conservation groups, agricultural partners, and community leaders.
  • Convene partners to advance collaborative recovery projects.
  • Support recovery councils, steering committees, and advisory groups to strengthen shared ownership and accountability.

Program Implementation & Oversight

  • Oversee planning, delivery, and evaluation of recovery projects.
  • Supervise and mentor Program Recovery Coordinators and other assigned staff.
  • Ensure projects stay on schedule, within budget, and compliant with grants, contracts, and regulations.
  • Review and approve scopes of work, contracts, and partner agreements.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on performance, outcomes, and environmental impact.

Funding Strategy & Financial Stewardship

  • Partner with the Executive Director, Development Director, and finance team to align recovery priorities with fundraising, grants, and investments.
  • Support grant development (scoping, proposals, budgeting, and reporting).
  • Manage recovery program budgets and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.

Communications & Public Engagement

  • Provide strategic and technical guidance for recovery- related communications.
  • Help shape messaging, impact stories, and public materials that strengthen engagement, partnerships and fundraising.
  • Serve as a primary technical and program spokesperson for watershed recovery work.

Organizational Leadership & Program Oversight

  • Contribute to organizational leadership, strategic planning and operational effectiveness.
  • Foster cross-funtional collaboration across the staff.
  • Support organizational events, meetings, and outreach as needed.
  • Advance Fox-Wolf culture, sustainability, and growth through general leadership responsibilities.


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, watershed management, public administration, or a related field.
  • Proven experience leading watershed conservation, or environmental programs.
  • Strong background in partnership development, project management, and multi-stakeholder coordination.
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication, and technical-writing skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in nutrient reduction, agricultural conservation, Great Lakes basin initiatives, or watershed recovery planning.
  • Knowledge of conservation finance, grants management, and public-private partnerships.
  • Experience working with nonprofit boards, advisory councils and executive leadership.


Compensation, Benefits & Work Environment

Salary & Benefits:
• $70,000 – $90,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
• 3 weeks of paid time off (PTO) to start, plus 9 paid holidays
• 3% 401(k) retirement contribution
• Note: Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance does not currently offer health or dental insurance

Work Environment
This is a full-time, exempt position based in the Appleton office with hybrid work offered. The role requires regular regional travel throughout the Fox-Wolf River Basin, as well as occasional evening and weekend commitments. A valid Wisconsin driver’s license and access to an insured, reliable vehicle are required.

Position Summary

The Watershed Cleanup Intern will lead coordination of Fox-Wolf’s annual Watershed Cleanup, one of the region’s largest volunteer-driven environmental events. This position offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to manage a large-scale project from planning through execution, making it an ideal capstone or practicum experience.

The intern will oversee all aspects of the cleanup with support from Fox-Wolf staff, gaining real world experience in project management, communications, volunteer coordination, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate all logistics for the annual Watershed Cleanup

• Recruit and communicate with site leaders, volunteers, and partners

• Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies to grow participation

• Manage event registration, data tracking, and reporting

• Coordinate event materials, supplies, and site logistics

• Support sponsorship outreach and partnership development

• Assist with event-day coordination and post-event wrap-up, including reporting results and impact metrics

• Collaborate with Fox-Wolf staff on communications, outreach, and program alignment

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing a degree at a technical college, 4-year university, or graduate program

• Interest in management, environmental science, communications, marketing, or related field

• Strong organizational and time management skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team

• Passion for environmental conservation and community engagement
