AIS Outreach Connects with People In New Places
Trout Unlimited Cabin Fever Days
On January 19th, the Fox Valley Trout Unlimited hosted their annual Cabin Fever Day. The event is designed for people who are already tired of the wintry weather and would much rather be out enjoying our lakes and rivers. Vendors from all across the country come to talk about trout fishing, discuss techniques, and sell both guided fishing trips and equipment. In Wisconsin, some popular trout fishing streams in the southeastern part of the state are beginning to be invaded by and aquatic invasive species (AIS) called the New Zealand Mud Snail. Trout Unlimited graciously donated a booth space to the Winnebago Waterways AIS Program in order for people to ask questions and learn how to stop the spread of this invader. If you were at the event, don’t hesitate to let us know if the information was useful or if you are interested in a boot brush to help clean off any invasive species!
Fox Cities House and Outdoor Living Show
From January 4th through the 6th, the Fox Cities Exhibition Center played host to the House and Outdoor Living Show. Chris Acy, the Winnebago Waterways AIS Coordinator was at the event to talk to folks who were interested in constructing a pond for their home. With so many options available for aquatic plants in their new pond, Chris gave folks information about the risks of using invasive species such as water hyacinth and offering a list of native alternatives that are just as beautiful. Many AIS are introduced into new lakes and rivers through accidental and intentional release of their plants and animals from ponds or aquariums. With a population of water hyacinth reoccurring every year in Winneconne, the issue hits close to home for all those that use and enjoy the Winnebago Waterways. Make sure to never release aquatic plants or animals into your local lake or river as they may become invasive species or be harboring a disease that could become invasive!
