Wildlife Planting Program

The Wildlife Planting Program provides technical and financial assistance to participants for planting trees and/or shrubs. The Program incentivizes producers to plant trees and shrubs in marginal agricultural areas or where resource concerns exist. When these practices are applied on cropland edges and odd-shaped field corners, they can provide environmental benefits like increased carbon sequestration and reduced soil erosion. Producers may optionally plant prairie or food plot establishment with the trees and shrubs to increase habitat benefits. Pheasants Forever will give producers technical assistance every step of the way and provide a $7500/Acre one-time incentive payment for participation.

Wildlife habitat Ideas

  • Hedgerows: Woody vegetation planted along fence rows or between fields that provides refuge, travel corridors and escape routes for birds and mammals.
  • Screening: Using trees and shrubs to create visual barriers. Especially useful in food plots adjacent to open areas, screening can create a sense of safety for wildlife while allowing hunter access.
  • Edge-Feathering: Creating more diverse and desired habitat by gradually transitioning from one habitat type to the next (i.e. from a mature forest to an open field)
  • Other Wildlife Planting Options Include: Forest Creation, Habitat Connection and Transition, Wildlife Cover and Forage, Riparian Stabilization, and More!

Enrollment

Ready to start farming Climate Smart? To begin enrollment, review the Wildlife Planting program requirements. When you are ready to enroll, complete and submit the required application documents. Simply download, fill out, and scan and email or mail to Fox-Wolf. Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance will respond within 2 weeks upon receipt of application. Timeline is dependent upon verifying eligibility through USDA-FSA.

Step 1: Review Practice Requirements and Eligibility

Before filling out the required enrollment paperwork, please review the Wildlife Planting Program requirements and eligibility to determine if you qualify.

Program requirements and eligibility can be found in the Requirements and Eligibility document. If you have questions regarding eligibility, contact the Pheasants Forever Climate Smart staff.

Land located within the 21 counties of the Fox-Wolf Basin (see map) are considered eligible. Land located within the true boundaries of the Basin will receive priority over those that are not. Fox-Wolf reserves the right to decline enrollment to land in counties outside the core (Brown, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara, and Winnebago) watershed boundaries. Some additional requirements apply, see section above. Contact Pheasants Forever Climate Smart staff to determine eligibility.

Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities is a USDA program “committed to supporting a diverse range of farmers, ranchers, and private forest landowners through Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities. This effort will expand markets for America’s climate-smart commodities, leverage the greenhouse gas benefits of climate-smart commodity production, and provide direct, meaningful benefits to production agriculture, including for small and underserved producers.  USDA is investing more than $3.1 billion for 141 projects through this effort and all the projects require meaningful involvement of small and underserved producers.”

For more information, please visit USDA’s Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities website.

Participants must be enrolled with FSA (have a Farm ID) before signing a contract. If a participant is not currently enrolled, they can become enrolled and then participate in the project.

Technical support to assist with FSA enrollment is available, through this program, by Wisconsin Farmers Union.

No, Pheasants Forever will not provide technical assistance to participants to help with the planting of trees/shrubs. Pheasants Forever will help participants find appropriate contractors to help with planting and site preparation.

Tree and shrub starts can be purchased from county tree sales, the DNR, or pre-approved private nurseries.

Native prairie and food plot seeds can be purchased from pre-approved vendors.

The Farm Climate Smart program uses NRCS practice standards to determine requirements for each practice incentivized. NRCS outlines specific lifespans (i.e. length of time it takes for a practice to become functional for the intended purpose) for many practices. For Wildlife Plantings, we follow NRCS practice standard 612 which outlines a lifespan of 15 years.
