Help Monitor Salt Pollution in the Fox-Wolf River Basin This Winter!
Winter brings snow, ice, and slippery sidewalks. Sodium chloride (salt), widely used on roads, parking lots, and sidewalks to keep us safe, can also harm our streams and wildlife when overused. Fox-Wolf is partnering with the Izaak Walton League to gather more data on chloride levels in local waterways. This information helps residents and community leaders understand the impacts of salt and why adopting smarter winter management practices—and adjusting our expectations for road conditions—can protect both our environment and community.
That’s where you come in. Join us this winter to monitor chloride levels in streams throughout the Fox-Wolf River Basin!
Training Opportunities:
📅 November 4th at Noon or 5 p.m.
📍 Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance
Can’t make it in person? We also offer a virtual training option.
Volunteers will receive a free Salt Watch kit, and monitoring is simple and rewarding. You can use your kit whenever it’s safe to approach a waterway, but salt levels are most important to measure:
- Before a winter storm, to find out the “normal” level of salt in your stream
- After salt has been applied to roads
- After the first warm day or rainstorm following a snow or freeze
- After the next rain event
You’ll learn more at the training!
We need volunteers across the basin, especially for smaller streams and rivers. To sign up, click the button below, or reach out to Alyssa Reinke at Alyssa@fwwa.org with any questions.
Your efforts help protect our waterways, wildlife, and communities—one stream at a time!
