For some fields, too much water can be a real problem, causing gullies and soil erosion. There are a variety of conservation practices that can be used to help slow, guide, and filter runoff water, resulting in less erosion and fields that are more workable.

USES: Grassed Waterway, Two-Staged Ditch, Floodplain or Channel Restoration, Flood Mitigation, or Drainage Management

INCENTIVE TYPE: 100% Implementation Cost

NRCS STANDARDS: Grassed Waterway (412), Lined Waterway or Outlet (468), and Open Channel (582)

Incentive Rates & Uses

Description: Creation of shallow waterway, planted with dense vegetation, used to control flow of water in field resulting in a reduction in soil erosion and gullying.

  • Example Use: Grassed Waterway
  • Practice Type: Engineered
  • Incentive Rate: Cost of Implementation
    • This Includes the Total Cost of: Technical Assistance, Construction, Permitting, Environmental Evaluation, Cultural Surveying, and Practice Design
  • Practice Lifespan: 10 years
  • Land Incentive: 10 years of county-average rental rate OR land value if tied to easement

Description: Reinforced channel used to guide fast-moving water.

  • Example Use: Gully Correction and Runoff Control
  • Practice Type: Engineered
  • Incentive Rate: Cost of Implementation
    • This Includes the Total Cost of: Technical Assistance, Construction, Permitting, Environmental Evaluation, Cultural Surveying, and Practice Design
  • Practice Lifespan: 15 years
  • Land Incentive: 15 years of county-average rental rate OR land value if tied to easement

Description: Construction of channel used for flood mitigation, habitat, or drainage.

  • Example Use: Two-Stage Ditch, Flood Control, Floodplain or Channel Restoration, Drainage Management
  • Practice Type: Engineered
  • Incentive Rate: Cost of Implementation
    • This Includes the Total Cost of: Technical Assistance, Construction, Permitting, Environmental Evaluation, Cultural Surveying, and Practice Design
  • Practice Lifespan: 15 years
