Advancement

Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance is excited to announce that the Winnebago Waterways Program is moving forward with the development of an updated Lake Management Plan for the Winnebago Pool Lakes. This update is greatly needed as the last plan was written in 1989. The new plan will serve as a guide for management and will open up new opportunities for project funding throughout the System.

The Winnebago Waterways Program serves as a framework for cooperation and is supported by staff from Calumet, Winnebago, Fond du Lac and Waushara Counties, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), UW-Extension and other local groups. The program provides the opportunity for regional efforts that span multiple counties and local units of government to effectively and efficiently address aquatic invasive species, public outreach and non-point pollution. Instead of competing for resources, regional partnerships are developed to support priority projects and practices in the watershed. The Winnebago Waterways Steering Committee guides this program by providing oversight of the development and implementation of a lake management plan for the Winnebago Waterways System.

With support from Calumet, Fond du Lac, and Winnebago Counties, FWWA will coordinate the advancement of the Lake Management Plan with the goal of working toward implementation of practices to improve water quality in the lakes. In addition, FWWA will facilitate the development of stakeholder relationships and partnerships to address issues on the system and to keep program projects moving forward. Partners are currently seeking additional funding from the Department of Natural Resources to update the long overdue plan. Pending funding approval, work on the Lake Management Plan will resume in 2017 with the final Lake Management Plan being completed in 2018.

Check back soon for progress updates as the project moves forward!
