Connecting Our Waters, in partnership with the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, the Waterways Association of Menominee and Shawano Counties, the Shawano County Land Conservation Department, and the Wisconsin DNR, is hosting the Wolf River Shoreline Tour and Workshop on August 8th, 2020 from 8:30 to noon.
The tour will depart from Glas Coffee in Shawano, 511 N. Main St., right around 8:30 am. The tour will then head south on the Wolf River towards the first site.
The first site on the tour will be a shoreline project installed by a local business owner in Shawano. She utilized Shawano County LCD funds and plants from the Wolf River Chapter of Wild Ones to complete the project. She ended up winning the Earth Angel award from Wild Ones for their work on the shoreline.
From there we will head north toward Smalley Park in Shawano. Smalley Park hosts the Shawano Ski Sharks water-skiing shows every summer. The City of Shawano received a grant to do a large shoreline restoration in the park.
The tour then heads back into the Shawano Lake outlet to see the last two sites. Both sites were made possible with Shawano County LCD shoreline funds. Our last site will be the Glas Coffee shoreline project. Cellcom and Glas worked together to continue their green mission.
From there we will head over to Huckleberry Harbor to unload the boats. Attendees are able to leave or join us for a native plant workshop.
The native plant workshop will start around 10:45 with introductions and updates from local partners.
From there, we will discuss the importance of native plants, how to choose the right project for you. We will discuss the importance of plant height, the variation in blooming period, and blooming color.
We will also do a short lesson in using a dichotomous key. Many of the people we have talked to with native plant projects explain that they sometimes have a hard time remembering what they planted. By learning to use the dichotomous key found in many plant identification books, picture matching becomes a lot easier.
We will wrap up the workshop with listing the funding sources and taking any questions.
Attendees can attend the tour, workshop, or both.

Proper social distancing will be an effect. Tour may be canceled due to weather, the workshop will be held rain or shine. If changes happen regarding social distancing, registries will be alerted immediately and changes will be made to how the programming is shared. The tour will become a shareable video and we will do our best to host the workshop as a webinar.
