electronics in a dumpster

After a year-long exhibiting hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Fox-Wolf kicked off 2021 educational outreach in the Town of Black Wolf, a member community of the Northeast Wisconsin Stormwater Consortium (NEWSC). On May 15, the Town of Black Wolf held a drive-up hazardous waste collection and electronics recycling event. Town residents were encouraged to drop off broken electronics and materials that are corrosive, poisonous, flammable, or combustible. Certain household products – many which contain the same strictly regulated chemicals found in industrial waste – can have devastating consequences if not discarded properly. Inappropriate disposal of electronics is similarly harmful, as they contain toxic materials like lead and mercury. These pollutants can leach into groundwater and runoff into lakes and rivers, posing a risk to human health and harming the environment. Recycling events are a great way to promote the responsible disposal of hazardous materials.

Kelly Reyer, Outreach Coordinator, and Anna Bartsch, NEWSC Coordinator, attended the event to provide stormwater education. As Town of Black Wolf officials collected surrendered materials, Kelly and Anna spoke with residents about the positive impact of proper hazardous waste recycling and other ways to protect the waters of the Fox-Wolf River Basin. Several individuals vowed to improve the quality of water leaving their own property and entering stormwater by taking the Watershed Pledge.
