Volunteer Registration Now Open!

Join nearly 200 other water enthusiasts at local rendezvous sites around Wisconsin for the annual Statewide Aquatic Invasive Species Snapshot Day 2020! This year’s event will get people out on lakes and streams to search for invasive species such as escaped and released aquarium and water garden plants that could choke our rivers and lakes if gone undetected. We will use binoculars and rakes to monitor for aquatic invasive species to protect Wisconsin’s waters! More information and volunteer registration are located below! This year’s event will implement safety measures such as social distancing and recommend all volunteers wear masks.

Event Information

What is Aquatic Invasive Species Snapshot Day?

AIS Snapshot Day is a one day event where volunteers across the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota look for for prohibited and restricted invasive species. With your help, we are able to find where invasive species are in our waterways while looking for new invasive species.  By looking for invasive species, we can track where invasive species are located and then work to control and hopefully remove them!

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers get to be a scientist for a day! Prior to the event, all volunteers will participate in a virtual training hosted by River Alliance. The training is scheduled for August 6th at 11 am but the recording can be viewed anytime before the event. On August 15th, participants will be ready to venture to selected monitoring sites to get to know their waters and help to discover any aquatic invasive species. This is a free event that is recommended for ages 8 and up; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will visit several locations along the shoreline to sample for invasive species. If find any, you will collect a sample in a plastic bag. After sampling, you will work with your local coordinator to drop off any suspected invasive species and supplies.
